Envirothon
The Envirothon is an outdoor, hands-on learning experience for high school students from grades 9th – 12th, put on by the local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) and sponsorship from local businesses. The Envirothon was held at the Rydell Refuge by Erskine on May 2th, 2018. It involved students from Norman, Polk, Mahnomen and Red Lake counties. There were 19 teams this year. Waubun placed 1st and 3rd and Crookston placed second. Schools from Norman County that attended this event were Norman County West and Norman County East.
The Envirothon centers around five different learning stations (soils, water, forestry, wildlife, and a current events topic, (which was Managed Grazing Systems), each of which are staffed by professionals in that area. At each station, teams composed of 4-5 students (5 students on a team are required to attend the state competition), answer 20 questions on that subject. Since the event takes place outdoors, questions involve actual contact with natural resources. After finishing at one station, the team moves on to the next. The students will participate in an all day event from 9:30 to 1:30. The top 3 teams from each area location will be invited to participate in a State Envirothon to be held on May 21 at Shetek Lutheran Ministries at Slayton Mn.
Norman County sponsors for 2018 are;
American Federal Bank, Bennett Houglum Agency, Centrol Inc, Halle & Nelson, Ada Building Center, Kelly's Chrysler, Twin Valley Agency, Wild Rice Watershed, 1st National Bank of Twin Valley, Red River State Bank, Prairie Dental, SGF Inc., Cliff Hanson Inc., Northwestern Bank, RDO, VFW Post 7557 of Ada, American Legion Post #505 of Gary and the American Legion #431 of Twin Valley.
